The photographs show it getting closer. Nobody saw it walk.
Ellen first noticed it beyond the washing line. The garden backed onto trees, so a deer was not remarkable. What bothered her was the hour. She had woken at 2:47, and the animal was looking directly at the bedroom window.
On the second night it stood beside the shed. On the third it was in the flowerbed. She placed her phone on the sill and took a photograph each time. In all three images its head was at precisely the same angle. The antlers overlapped the window frame, even in the first photograph, when it should have been too far away.
Her partner suggested a garden ornament and offered to check. They went outside together in daylight. There were no tracks in the soft earth. The plants in the flowerbed were undisturbed. Ellen kept the curtains closed that evening, but woke at 2:47 to the quiet knock of something hard against glass.
The emergency-call transcript begins with a question about the height of her bedroom. She explains twice that it is on the first floor. The operator asks whether someone might be standing on a ladder. Ellen says she can see the head, but cannot make herself look lower.
Halfway through the call, the knocking stops. There is a scrape, followed by a rush of air. Ellen says the window is open. The operator asks if the animal is still outside. She does not answer immediately.
The last intelligible sentence is spoken very quietly: she can hear it breathing, but the glass is no longer between them. The call stays connected for another forty seconds. Her phone is later found on the sill, pointing into the room.
Has anyone else seen this?
@third_floor
Does anyone else have the time 02:47 in all their photos? Mine were taken on different nights.
@windowseat
Yes. I thought my phone was saving the first photo over and over until I noticed the fence behind it had changed.
@third_floor
The latch was shut when I went to bed. I took a picture of that too.
