Something small moves between the sheets after dark.

Card reference / Witness statement, recording 07

The sheets had been left out because the weather stayed warm. By the time Liv remembered them, the garden was dark and the neighbouring windows had gone out. Halfway down the line, a small shape moved behind a pillowcase.

She thought it was a bird caught in the fabric. When she lifted the corner, the shape moved to the next sheet without touching the ground. There was no wind. She gathered the washing quickly and carried it inside in a basket against her chest.

The first sign was almost pleasant. Clothes she had left in a heap were folded the next morning. A lost sock appeared on the radiator. The house smelt of clean linen, even in rooms where she kept no washing. Once, she saw a pale little face between two towels and found herself smiling before she had decided what it was.

On recording 07, Liv says this was the mistake. She spoke to it as though it were a shy animal. She left the laundry cupboard open. The following night, something followed her from the kitchen to the stairs, making a soft brushing sound along the wall.

After that, the folded clothes became unfamiliar. A child’s shirt. A nightdress with an old repair at the collar. Several small handkerchiefs, still warm. She put them in a bag outside, but found them stacked neatly on her bed before she had finished locking the door.

The statement ends with a question about the basket. The interviewer asks why she has brought it with her. Liv says she could not leave it alone in the house. Through the final minute of the recording, fabric can be heard shifting against wicker.

Has anyone else seen this?

Saw something behind the sheets. Too small to be a person. It moved when I moved, not when the wind did.

Did you bring the whole basket inside or take everything off separately?

Whole basket. Someone’s folded it all. I live alone.
