Card reference / Police interview transcript, Tape 06

They noticed the balloons while sorting the house. Six of them had been tied to the upstairs banister, although nobody remembered bringing them. The family assumed a neighbour had made a mistake. They cut the strings and left the balloons in the garden.

At a little after midnight, the floorboards began to creak in the sitting room. The witness on Tape 06 says it sounded like someone finding a comfortable place to stand. She looked through the half-open door and saw a figure facing the empty sofa. Behind it, six strings hung from the ceiling.

It bowed. For several minutes it performed small, careful gestures: taking off a hat that was not there, opening a door nobody could see, laying a table in the air. Each gesture was followed by a pause. The witness stayed in the hallway because she could not understand why it expected an audience.

Then it began copying her father. The tilt of his head when he read. The way he patted his pockets before leaving. The small movement he made to ease himself out of a chair. He had died in that room three days earlier. Her brother came downstairs and watched beside her.

He made a short sound with his hands. On the tape, she insists it was only once. The figure stopped mid-gesture. Its face turned towards the doorway for the first time, and it held one arm out towards her brother.

The interviewer asks what happened next. The witness asks whether her brother is in the next room. This question is repeated several times. At the end of the interview, the microphone picks up a faint squeak. She says it sounds like a balloon being rubbed against a ceiling.

We threw the balloons out before dinner. They’re back on the stairs. Different knots this time.

If there’s someone in the front room, don’t go in. You don’t have to be polite.

It keeps waiting after every movement. Like we’re supposed to do something.
