The first requests were small. Nobody recorded the final price.
The parish record begins with ordinary accounts: candle wax, roof repairs, bread for families who could not pay. Between two columns of figures, someone has written that the church no longer answers. The next page lists a different address.
People went there after dark. Some brought flowers; others brought coins or pieces of jewellery. They described a veiled woman who listened without speaking. A child’s fever broke. An old man walked home without his stick. A woman who had been unable to sleep returned to work. Each marked a small cross beside a name in the parish book.
At first, the requests in return seemed harmless. Leave a chair empty at supper. Keep the kitchen window open until morning. Do not answer when your brother calls on Sunday. Those who obeyed remained well. Those who did not came back to the address with larger offerings.
The bookkeeper began making a second list. Empty chairs. Open windows. Unanswered visits. Taken separately, the requests were peculiar. Together, they described a village gradually making room for someone and shutting out everyone else.
He went to the woman’s house and asked what would happen when the debt was paid. A voice behind the veil asked which debt he meant. On the table beside her was the parish record. He had left it locked in the church.
The last intact page records a service attended by every person who had received a cure. Their names are present, but their signatures have been crossed out. In the margin, the bookkeeper notes that nobody sang. From the empty chair beside the altar came the sound of someone quietly counting.
Has anyone else seen this?
@parish_copy
My aunt’s condition improved after she visited. She was told never to let anyone sit in the chair by the fire.
@empty_chair
Was it a chair she already owned, or did one arrive afterwards?
@parish_copy
I asked her. She says she can’t remember buying it.
