Two women attend every funeral. Neither appears on a guest list.
The funeral director first mentioned the sisters as a practical problem. They stood close enough to the open grave to obstruct the bearers, and neither would move when asked. Their crying was quiet and continuous. The family assumed they were distant relatives.
They appeared again the following Thursday. This time the deceased had no surviving family. The director recognised their dresses, the way they held their hands and the steady sound of their grief. He asked whom they had come to mourn. One lifted her head slightly. He found himself apologising.
By entry 31, he had seen them at five services. Sometimes they were already waiting when the procession arrived. Sometimes they appeared between the last hymn and the walk to the grave. Nobody remembered seeing them arrive. There was never an extra car.
At the sixth funeral, a young man dropped his service sheet. The director bent to retrieve it, and the crying stopped. Both sisters were looking at the young man. Their faces had not changed, but the absence of sound was so abrupt that several people turned around.
The director took the young man by the elbow and asked him to help carry flowers back to the car. He kept talking until they had left the cemetery. In the journal, he apologises for what he told the family: that the young man had felt faint. He does not explain how he knew to get him away.
The sisters were absent from the next service. On the morning after it, the director arrived at work to find two wet patches on the reception chairs. The visitor book lay open. Under the heading ‘Name of deceased’, someone had carefully printed his name.

Two women cried through my uncle’s service. We thought they were from his old job. Everyone from the job thought they were family.
@black_umbrella
We had them at my mother’s. Were they still crying when everyone else left?
@last_service
Until my cousin went back for the flowers. He says they both stopped.
