A figure among the graves, and a notebook that should have stayed closed.
The notebook came to the archive in a cardboard box with no covering letter. Its first pages repeated the story on the character card: a tall, dark figure among the graves, dead foxes, and the belief that something in Highgate was hungry. The pages that followed were written by a different hand.
The second writer never claimed to have seen a vampire. He wrote about a man he mistook for a cemetery visitor, standing beside a monument after the gates had closed. He called out a warning about the exit. The figure turned towards him, but made no attempt to leave.
For several evenings he saw it in a different part of the grounds. Each position was marked on a rough plan. When he joined the marks, they formed a route leading towards the wall nearest his house. He crossed the line out so heavily that the pen tore through the paper.
The next entry describes a smell of cold stone and something sweet in the hallway. His coat was damp, although he had not worn it that day. He wrote that he had checked every window. Beneath this, in smaller letters, he added that he had forgotten to check the letterbox.
A neighbour later appears in the account, knocking to ask why he had been standing outside her bedroom window. He had no memory of leaving home. She recognised his coat. She was less certain about his face.
The last page contains a plan of his own hallway, drawn with the same care as the cemetery map. A single mark sits just inside the front door. There is no date. The paper has been folded so that the mark touches the place where the writer has drawn his bed.

The coat in that notebook description bothers me. My grandfather used to say the figure looked like someone you had seen earlier that day.
