Three familiar neighbours. No record of anyone living there.
Daniel passed the three neighbours every morning on his way to the station. They stood just inside the gate of number 18: two at the sides, one in the middle. He nodded. They smiled. After a few weeks, he began to feel rude for never having introduced himself.
He mentioned them to a delivery driver who was trying to find the house. The driver looked at the gate, then at Daniel, and said the property had been empty for years. Daniel thought they were talking about different addresses until he saw the number on the parcel.
The following morning, the three were in their usual positions. Daniel stopped and asked whether the parcel had arrived. None of them answered. From close up, he could see the front windows had been boarded on the inside. The centre figure’s shoes were resting in the same shallow depressions in the gravel as the day before.
He began leaving earlier. They were there at seven, then at six, then at half past five. On a Sunday he watched from across the street for almost an hour. A curtain moved in an upstairs window of the neighbouring house. All three heads turned towards it at once.
His recorded statement was made after the council opened number 18. The interior was bare. There was no furniture, no working water supply and no indication of recent occupation. Daniel was asked to point out where the three had stood. The gravel contained six worn hollows.
That evening, he checked the photograph he had taken while the council workers were inside. The gate was empty. Across the street, outside his own front door, three small pale faces were just visible in the reflection of a parked car.

They’re outside 18 again. Has anyone actually spoken to them? I’ve lived here eleven years and don’t know their names.
@parcel_18
No one has an active delivery address there. I get sent to it by mistake all the time.
@early_train
I left through the back this morning. They were facing the alley.
